Commtest Instruments Ltd began in 1989 with the release of our first product, the ProfilerTM data logger. This was when Commtest was a division of Dynamic Controls, a world-leading supplier of electronic products to the health care industry. In 1993 Commtest became an independent company with our own unique identity and vision.

A core feature of this vision was to design and produce outstanding electronic instruments recognised for their innovation and value. True to this desire, and having gone through three major revisions since its release, the Profiler data logger today is a recognised world leader, used by major railroad and transit companies in over 20 countries.

The next product devised by Commtest was the MMS3000 Series of fully portable data loggers. First released in 1997, these instruments set new standards in three critical areas: measurement flexibility, ease of use and affordability. Commtest had produced another winner and today there are five products in the MMS3000 Series of instruments, catering to a wide variety of measurement applications.

Always looking to scale new summits, Commtest’s design team next set about creating the vbSeries of vibration and balancing instruments, which debuted in April 1999. Following the same customer-focused vision of the MMS3000 range, the vbSeries instruments are full featured yet easy-to-use vibration analyzers offered at a price nothing short of revolutionary.

While Commtest’s substantial product range already provides us with a wide customer base, we continue to invest heavily in Research & Development projects. With an eye firmly fixed on future product creation and enhancement, our ongoing goal is to enter into additional markets where there are even more customers to delight.

At present, Commtest’s complete product range is comprised of two distinct groups, each built around the principle of offering our customers the best possible value in portable data acquisition.

Every Commtest product shares our signature rugged case, long-life battery pack, a large easy-to-read LCD, and a corresponding version of our analysis software. This software offers features such as data editing, basic statistical analysis, and hardcopy printing for all recorded data. The downloaded data is also easily exported into spreadsheet and database programs for further analysis.

Our products never become outdated as new features are easily programmed into the instrument via our Proflash™ procedure using the built-in serial or USB port. Product update files are available for download from our website.

The first product group consists of our Profiler data logger and accessories. The Profiler data logger is a precision instrument that is used to measure and record surface irregularities (including bar-to-bar height variations) and out-of-roundness on DC Electric Motor commutators and slip rings. The Profiler instrument measures linear displacement with a resolution of 1 micron. Maintaining commutators in top condition extends brush life, optimizes motor output efficiency, and keeps the motor running safer and longer. Many rail and transit companies throughout the world attest to the outstanding value of the Profiler instrument.

The second product group, called the vbSeries, was released in early 1999. The vb7 vibration analyzer, shown to the left, was released in 2007. This instrument range opens up full-featured vibration analysis to virtually every engineer and technician at a fraction of the typical cost for comparable packages. Vibration analysis and control of rotating machinery can save companies 10% or more on power consumption, and can reduce overall maintenance expenditures by 33%. Our Ascent® software application has also been completely revised to match the enhanced capabilities of this new product.
